Happy New Year (soon)
I want to bake a celebratory apple cake for the house
but all the recipes require a bundt cake pan
(which is an extravagant purchase)
when i already have a round cake tray.
Happy New Year nonetheless!
i saw the wind softly lift the leaf as if
for me to peer at its underside, almost as to
release a secret back into the air,
where it is kept buoyant.
but that was last spring, when there
were leaves, not needles attached to wired branches, not chill
to shudder past all defense
not to hear the tinkle of snow like glass underfoot and
peer blearily at the bleary cold
and so this is that 3am ramble.
